Mason Jennings at Colony Woodstock NY March 12 2020

MASON JENNINGS

When Mason Jennings started writing songs for his new record, Songs From When We Met, he was in a setting he had never written in before. “I was living out at a farm for a month and walking through some old woods on the property every day. There was a river. And each day an owl would come find me, and then perch above me, day or night. I saw lots of snakes. Songs just came to me there. They were coming in so fast they just about took my head off. It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before,” recalls Jennings. In Native American animal medicine snakes symbolize rebirth, owls symbolize seeing what others cannot and turning darkness into light. Both are themes throughout the album and the music has a clear hopeful feeling.

ARCHERS OF LOAF

Singer/guitarist Eric Bachmann, guitarist Eric Johnson, bassist Matt Gentling, and drummer Mark Price formed Archers of Loaf in Chapel Hill, NC, in 1991. Icky Mettle was the first of four studio albums for the band that seemed to personify what SPIN magazine deemed “a tremendously optimistic time in underground music, that 15-minute period in the early 1990s when it looked like indie rock really might take over the world.”

Kat Wright at Colony Woodstock NY Friday March 20

KAT WRIGHT

Kat Wright, whose voice is both sultry and dynamic, delicate yet powerful; gritty but highly emotive and nuanced, has been described as “a young Bonnie Raitt meets Amy Winehouse”. Add to that voice enough stage presence to tame lions, and the combination of feline femininity proves immediately enchanting. There’s soul flowing in and out of her rock ‘n’ roll with a serpentine seduction. Some of soul music’s sweet, grand dames belt, shout, seethe, and succumb, while Wright sings gently like a heartache’s apology. It’s funky in spots and beautiful all over. And it hurts a little … like it should.

Signing their first record deal, the debut ”Feast of the Sunfish’ was released in 1984. Already a staple in all the legendary NYC clubs such as CBGB, Danceteria, Peppermint Lounge, Pyramid, 8BC etc… the bands profile grew through college radio and extensive touring. As it came time to record their second record, they signed with Rough/Trade records, The lp “Back at the Plain of Jars”, with its version of Lipps Inc. disco hit “Funkytown” brought them national recognition and a new record deal with Mpls. based Twin/Tone records. Touring with a who’s who of 1980s underground/college radio peers they made 2 more recordings with Twin/Tone. MTV started playing their videos in 1986. In 1989 with the release of “Stick It”, they garnered much acclaim with the singles “Stop, Drop and Roll” and ”Forget Me Not”. They disbanded in 1991. Slambovian Circus of Dreams at Colony Woodstock NY April 11 2020

SLAMBOVIAN CIRCUS OF DREAMS

Formed in Sleepy Hollow, New York over a decade ago, The Slambovian Circus of Dreams (AKA The Grand Slambovians) pioneered the alt-folk/americana genre, staying on the fringes of the music industry and under the radar while producing several critically acclaimed studio albums. ‘A Box of Everything’ the band’s most recent release is a compilation of the ‘Greatest Hits’ you’ve never heard from this reclusive band. Their melodic avant-folk conjures a quirkier Tom Petty or fuller Buffalo Tom with an exotic instrumental arsenal. If you like Dylan, Bowie, The Decemberists, you’ll find a lot to love about this band which features an otherworldly slide mandolin, accordion, cello and styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Headlining major music festivals and venues across the US, Canada and UK, they built their career from the ground up with a loyal fan base supporting them all the way.

Hite took the name “Canned Heat” from a 1928 recording by Tommy Johnson. Rounding out the band in 1967 were Larry “The Mole” Taylor on bass, an experienced session musician who had played with Jerry Lee Lewis and The Monkees and Adolfo “Fito” de la Parra on drums who had played in two of the biggest Latin American bands, Los Sinners and Los Hooligans.

A RARE PAIRING OF MUSICAL FRIENDS: FREEBO, HOWE, MAROTTA & TRAUM

Alice Howe’s path to “up-and-coming” artist seems both fated and winding. She grew up in Newton, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston, in a home filled with music and art. Long outdoor walks were encouraged, and Howe would often disappear to wander through her grandmother’s garden next door or to journal and turn experiences into songs. “I can’t remember not singing,” she says with a laugh. Terry Reid & the Cosmic Americam Derelicts at Colony Woodstock NY May 9 2020

TERRY REID & THE COSMIC AMERICAN DERELICTS

Terry Reid first came to the public’s attention back in 1965 when he was asked to open up for the Rolling Stones on their UK Tour, subsequent tour openers for Cream, Savoy Brown, Fleetwood Mac, Rory Gallagher, Black sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix further enhanced Terry’s reputation as one of the most powerful and soulful voices in the British music scene. Jimmy Page even asked Terry to form a band, which with Terry’s help became Led Zeppelin. Terry had to turn down the offer from Page, as he had already signed a contract to tour the states with the Stones-Ya-Ya’s Tour. Terry recommended both Plant and Bonham for the gig, and the rest is history. Terry has released six studio albums and two live albums over the course of his 50 year career. Terry has performed thousands of gigs throughout UK/Europe, US, and Japan over the course of his storied career. A Terry Reid show isn’t just a concert, it is an adventure of songs, stories and laughter. Come on out and see why Terry’s nickname is Superlungs!

THE COLOSSAL SH*TSHOW w/ Amanda Palmer & Chris Wells at Colony Woodstock NY May 14 2020

THE COLOSSAL SH*TSHOW CABARET W/ AMANDA PALMER & CHRIS WELLS

In honor of the insanity of the present moment, Amanda Palmer and Chris Wells present, The Colossal Shitshow, a bleak and joyful existential cabaret. It’s a helluva time to be alive, innit? The climate, the primaries, the country, the virus! What do we do in times of such global insanity? Some people drink, some bury their heads in the sand, we prefer to write stories, songs and sketches and to perform them in front of friends and fellow travelers. This raucous, bawdy and darkly hysterical night of cabaret aims to provide laughter, communion and a bit of a reprieve from the madness of the world.

The Remains at Colony Woodstock NY Friday May 15 2020

THE REMAINS

The Remains 55 year musical adventure began when Barry Tashian, Vern Miller, Bill Briggs and Chip Damiani met at Boston University in 1964. There was musical magic in the air from the first time they played together. They began performing at a favorite local watering hole, The Rathskeller, and soon, the lines stretched from Kenmore Square to Fenway Park on Remains’ night at “The Rat.” It wasn’t long before word got out and record labels came courting the band…(MORE)

Andy Shauf at Colony Woodstock NY Saturday May 16 2020

ANDY SHAUF

Few artists are storytellers as deft and disarmingly observational as Andy Shauf. The Toronto-based, Saskatchewan-raised musician’s songs unfold like short fiction: they’re densely layered with colorful characters and a rich emotional depth. On his new album The Neon Skyline (out January 24 via ANTI-), he sets a familiar scene of inviting a friend for beers on the opening title track: “I said, ‘Come to the Skyline, I’ll be washing my sins away.’ He just laughed, said ‘I’ll be late, you know how I can be.'” The LP’s 11 interconnected tracks follow a simple plot: the narrator goes to his neighborhood dive, finds out his ex is back in town, and she eventually shows up. While its overarching narrative is riveting, the real thrill of the album comes from how Shauf finds the humanity and humor in a typical night out and the ashes of a past relationship.

Slaid Cleaves at Colony Woodstock NY May 17 2020

SLAID CLEAVES

Joseph Hudak of Rolling Stone calls Slaid Cleaves “a master storyteller, one influenced not by the shine of pop-culture but by the dirt of real life.” Now twenty-five years into his storied career, Cleaves’ songwriting has never been more potent than on his latest album Ghost on the Car Radio (2017). Described as “terse, clear and heartfelt” (NPR Fresh Air), his songs speak to timeless truths. “I’m not an innovator. I’m more of a keeper of the flame,” he says. The New York Daily News called his music “a treasure hidden in plain sight,” while the Austin Chronicle declared, “there are few contemporaries that compare. He’s become a master craftsman on the order of Guy Clark and John Prine.”

TOM PACHECO’S 21ST ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND CONCERT

Tom Pacheco‘s songs have been covered by Jefferson Starship, the Band, Rick Danko, Ritchie Havens, Scott Petito and Leslie Ruler, John Hall and dozens of European artists, many becoming number one hits in England and Norway. His albums have sold well in Europe. One became platinum in the mid 90’s. He played folk rock in Greenwich Village, NY in the late 60’s and alternative country in Austin Texas in the early 80’s. He walked out on the Nashville songwriting factories and spent 10 years in Dublin Ireland recording and touring extensively in Europe. He now lives in Woodstock, NY and tours both America and Europe. Wide Awake! is New York’s Parquet Courts’ fifth record since their formation eight years ago. It’s also their most groundbreaking. It’s an album about independence and individuality but also about collectivity and communitarianism. Love is at its center. There’s also a freshness here, a breaking of new territory that’s testament to the group’s restless spirit.

Nick Lowe has made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello-Graham Parker-Pretenders-The Damned), songwriter of at least three songs you know by heart, short-lived career as a pop star, and a lengthy term as a musicians’ musician. But in his current ‘second act’ as a silver-haired, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal.

The Skatalites at Colony Woodstock NY June 26 2020

THE SKATALITES

The Skatalites are celebrating their 55th anniversary. The original members had played on hundreds of recording sessions before forming the band in 1964. They backed most of the vocalists in Jamaica at that time, including Bob Marley,Toots and The Maytals, Jimmy Cliff, Alton Ellis,Ken Boothe and many more. After disbanding in 1965 the individual members continued playing in various groups as the music evolved from ska to rocksteady to reggae. In the late 70’s a resurgence of interest in the music began in the U.K. which caused the creation of many bands such as The Specials, The English Beat, Madness, The Selecter and Bad Manners. This became known as the “Two-Tone era” and these British musicians fused rock music with the ska and reggae. In The early 80’s the music started to spread to The U.S.A and other parts of the world and bands began to emerge everywhere playing different flavors of ska and reggae fused with whatever else they wanted to throw in,including hard core, jazz and even punk.

BRIAN FALLON W/ LAURA STEVENSON

Brian Fallon’s rock star days are firmly behind him. And no one is more accepting of that fact than Brian Fallon. Having recently turned 40, the New Jersey legend has left more than his youth in his rearview. His former outfit, The Gaslight Anthem, reunited for a string of reunion shows in 2018 but now only exists in that murky grey area known as “indefinite hiatus.” He released two well-received solo albums in the past four years, 2016’s Painkillers and 2018’s Sleepwalkers, but even those records dwell more in the rock genre than anywhere else…(MORE)
