Jules Taylor at Colony Woodstock NY

JULES TAYLOR FEATURING JON LIGHT

Jules Taylor: “His vocals are as weathered as an old highway sign and as inviting as your favorite mom and pop diner… Overall, the collection is the musical equivalent of the Great American Novel: a work that captures what it means to be human – the shortcomings and the triumphs, the heartaches and the joys.” – Paula Cummings, NYSMusic.com “A kind of high-drama ambient American rock with equal parts grit and ether. Its affinities are many: Wilco, Calexico, Drive-by Truckers, Neil Young…

DANIELIA COTTON

Danielia Cotton is a New York City based singer-songwriter originally from Hopewell, NJ. In 2010 Danielia was named Lilith Fair’s Ourstage Local Talent Winner for NYC. Since then she has shared the stage with the likes of Robert Cray, Bon Jovi, and Gregg Allman. In the review of her Rare Child album, the NY Times says this: “She’s a belter who can hold back or work her way up to a gospelly blues-rock shout, and in the songs she writes with her band’s brawny guitar riffs, she grapples with the road, salvation, holding on and letting go. The truth will set you free, but it always feels like it tears you apart, she sings. She’s a throwback, but a gutsy one.”

Ryan Martin at Colony Woodstock NY

RYAN MARTIN

Ryan Martin’s sophomore record, Gimme Some Light, is the sound of catharsis and renewal, loss and reinvention. It is a living jukebox, full of vivid, deeply personal songs that span considerable emotional and sonic terrain. Drawing from the same well of timeless American music that informs artists like Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Gillian Welch and Bruce Springsteen, Martin’s themes can get dark – self-doubt, longing, heartbreak, addiction – but the music is full of bold melodies, energy, humor and hope.

Sweet Spirit at Colony Woodstock NY

SWEET SPIRIT

There’s no slowing Sweet Spirit singer Sabrina Ellis down. In addition to fronting two extremely busy rock bands (Sweet Spirit and A Giant Dog), she recently recorded and toured behind a new collaboration with Har Mar Superstar called Heart Bones, and starred in a campy Austin stage production of Batman Returns Returns as none other than the Dark Knight himself. Having been less active in the past few months, it appears Sweet Spirit will return to Ellis’ forefront for 2019. The band recently completed tracking a new full-length record with engineer Stuart Sikes (Modest Mouse, Jack White) that will ready for release by year’s end. In the meantime, the band is releasing a new EP of songs not on the forthcoming record, and hitting the road hard, covering the entire U.S. this Spring with the same high octane performances they’ve become known for.

MIGHTY MYSTIC & “THE HARDER THEY COME” FILM SCREENING

Mighty Mystic is considered as one of the leaders in the U.S. Reggae scene and labeled by many as one of the more prolific artists to develop outside of Jamaica. He has gripped the scene with ferocious conviction and an uncanny ambition worthy to be mentioned among the greats. He has gone from being a fan of reggae music to being a contributor to the art.

The evening begins at 7:30 with a screening of classic reggae film “The Harder They Come”:

The Harder They Come is a 1972 Jamaican crime film directed by Perry Henzell and co-written by Trevor D. Rhone, and starring Jimmy CliffThe film is most famous for its reggae soundtrack that is said to have “brought reggae to the world”. Enormously successful in Jamaica, the film also reached the international market and has been described as “possibly the most influential of Jamaican films and one of the most important films from the Caribbean.” (WIKIPEDIA)

Over the course of their twenty-one-year career, Okkervil River has released nine albums that have given frontman Will Sheff a reputation as one of the greatest working songwriters in the country. As Sheff and his shifting lineup of players have traveled the world many times over, they’ve made fans ranging from Lou Reed to Barack Obama and been praised by outlets from the New York Times to NPR to Pitchfork, who called Sheff “One of indie rock’s most ambitious thinkers.” 2019 will see Okkervil River’s two-decades-plus trek around the globe captured and anthologized in “A Dream in the Dark,” a 12-album live series that follows the group from their shaky and earnest beginnings to their sweat-soaked barnstorming rock club days, and from big festival sets into mellow acoustic improvisations.

MARIA MULDAUR

Maria Muldaur is best known world-wide for her 1974 mega-hit “Midnight at the Oasis,” which received several Grammy nominations, and enshrined her forever in the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere; but despite her considerable pop music success, her 52-year career could best be described a long and adventurous odyssey through the various forms of American Roots Music. During the folk revival of the early 60s, she began exploring and singing early Blues, Bluegrass and Appalachian “Old Timey” Music, beginning her recording career in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band and shortly thereafter, joining the very popular Jim Kweskin Jug Band, touring and recording with them throughout the 60s. In the 42 years since “Midnight at the Oasis,” Maria has toured extensively worldwide and has recorded 40 solo albums covering all kinds of American Roots Music, including Gospel, R&B, Jazz and Big Band (not to mention several award-winning children’s albums), before settling comfortably into her favorite idiom, the Blues, in recent years.

The Messthetics featuring members of Fugazi at Colony Woodstock NY

THE MESSTHETICS

The last time drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally were in a band together, they were the rhythmic architects for Fugazi, an organization whose decade and a half of disciplined progressivism provided a necessary bridge between the zenith of late-punk expression and everything alternative in rock that followed. In 2016, the two were enlisted by guitarist Anthony Pirog in a conspiracy to subvert and reimagine the power trio, bringing fully into the 21st Century a form that may have reached near perfection with Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys on the very first day of the 1970s.

The Menzingers‘ eagerly awaited fifth full-length After the Party is available now. The album arrives as the follow-up to the Philadelphia-based band’s widely acclaimed Rented World.
Produced by Will Yip (Title Fight, Balance & Composure, Pianos Become the Teeth), After the Party taps into the Menzingers’ everyman romanticism to reflect on getting older but not quite growing up. Throughout the album, singer/guitarists Greg Barnett and Tom May, bassist Eric Keen, and drummer Joe Godino offset that deeply nuanced songwriting with anthemic harmonies, furious power chords, and larger-than-life melodies.

Traditionalists or progressives? Fronted by the charismatic Jamaican-born singer and songwriter Nee Nee Rushie, the seven-piece New York band The Big Takeover plays original music that is rooted in and reverent toward the genres and rhythms of Jamaican pop: reggae, rocksteady, ska. They are devotees of Desmond Dekker and the way the old school did it. At the same time, The Big Takeover crosses lines and blends traditions like global pop fusionists. Their deceptively complex arrangements and big hooks connect with the spirit of Motown and the uptown sophistication of the 21st century retro soul and R&B revival scene.

A consummate songwriter, as well as a gifted vocalist and multi instrumentalist, his collaborations with musical soulmate Cindy Cashdollar are not to be missed. Cindy is one of the all-time great steel guitar players who, in addition to her associations with Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Rod Stewart and many others, has won multiple awards including several Grammys. The addition of co-conspirator Scrappy Jud Newcomb is the icing on this already delectable musical cake. Scrappy is arguably the best guitarist in Austin today and his mandolin playing is stunning and soulful. The three performed together in Johnny’s band Hell Bent for six years before Cindy recently moved back to Woodstock. Join this trio of gifted Americana music greats for an unforgettable night of music and ‘troubadoric’ ramblings.
