Sean Rowe at Colony Woodstock NY September 18

SEAN ROWE

Though he grew up in the generally frozen landscape of Troy, New York, Sean Rowe spent many of his formative summers in DeLand, Florida — a small town between Orlando and Daytona Beach — where his father was a residential caretaker at a home for troubled youths. It was there, in a mercifully air-conditioned, mostly unused building filled with donated musical instruments, that Sean taught himself to play drums and then bass. For those who have wondered where his distinctly low and percussive approach to guitar playing comes from, I believe you now have your answer… (more)

WOODSTOCK FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS: A NIGHT AT SWITCH’N’PLAY

On the stages of Brooklyn’s bars and nightclubs, the boundaries of gender are being subverted into something both refreshingly weird and delightfully erotic. Featuring an all-star cast of standout performers from across the spectrum of queer identity, follow the members of the Switch n’ Play collective as they strip, strut and squirt their way towards being one of the Big Apple’s most exciting drag burlesque acts. Beneath the many layers of makeup and synthetic hair, the individuals of this colorful troupe find a space to express themselves and reclaim ownership of their bodies from the narrow confines of societal beauty standards. For Switch n’ Play members, baring it all to crowds of delighted strangers with their chosen family provides a sense of affirmation found nowhere else.

After the film’s screening at the Colony in Woodstock, enjoy a live performance featuring all seven members of Switch n’ Play in a burlesque show that will be queer in every sense of the word!

MARCO BENEVENTO

It’s impossible not to hear freedom and excitement coursing through the veins of Marco Benevento’s new studio album, ‘Let It Slide.’ Produced by Leon Michels (The Arcs, Lee Fields), the record introduces a gritty, soulful edge to Benevento’s brand of high-octane keyboard wizardry—an uptempo, uplifting sound he playfully describes as “hot dance piano rock.” For all Benevento’s virtuosity on the keys though, the songs here are driven primarily by intoxicating grooves, with spare drums and minimalist bass lines underpinning infectious, intentionally lo-fi vocal hooks. The resulting vibe is a timeless one, filtering elements of vintage R&B and soul through modern indie rock and pop sensibilities and peppering it with the kind of adventurous improvisation that Benevento’s come to be celebrated for worldwide…

Lula Wiles at Colony Woodstock NY November 20

LULA WILES

What will we do? For Lula Wiles, the trio made up of Isa Burke, Eleanor Buckland, and Mali Obomsawin, the question is central to the creation of their music—and it’s the title of their sophomore album, out in 2019 on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. “We wanted to make an album that reflected, in a current way, what we are all staying up late thinking about and talking about over drinks at the dinner table,” says Obomsawin. “What is everyone worried about, confiding in their friends about, losing sleep about?” Anchoring the band’s sharp, provocative songcraft is a mastery of folk music, and a willingness to subvert its hallowed conventions. They infuse their songs with distinctly modern sounds: pop hooks, distorted electric guitars, and dissonant multi-layered vocals, all employed in the service of songs that reclaim folk music in their own voice…

PATRICK WATSON

A singer/songwriter, film composer, and pianist based in Montreal, Canada, Patrick Watson makes explorative chamber pop with his band — also called Patrick Watson — often blending spare indie pop, synthesizer experiments, cinematic orchestral song, and a melancholy tone. The group’s second album, 2006’s Close to Paradise, won the Polaris Prize. After composing music for several short films, Watson made his feature-length debut with It’s Not Me, I Swear! in 2008. Released in 2015, Love Songs for Robots became his band’s fourth straight album to reach Canada’s Top Ten.
