Mighty Mystic & "The Harder They Come" Screening at Colony Woodstock NY

MIGHTY MYSTIC & “THE HARDER THEY COME” FILM SCREENING

Mighty Mystic is considered as one of the leaders in the U.S. Reggae scene and labeled by many as one of the more prolific artists to develop outside of Jamaica. He has gripped the scene with ferocious conviction and an uncanny ambition worthy to be mentioned among the greats. He has gone from being a fan of reggae music to being a contributor to the art.

The evening begins at 7:30 with a screening of classic reggae film “The Harder They Come”:

The Harder They Come is a 1972 Jamaican crime film directed by Perry Henzell and co-written by Trevor D. Rhone, and starring Jimmy CliffThe film is most famous for its reggae soundtrack that is said to have “brought reggae to the world”. Enormously successful in Jamaica, the film also reached the international market and has been described as “possibly the most influential of Jamaican films and one of the most important films from the Caribbean.” (WIKIPEDIA)

Sunshine Deva at Colony Woodstock NY

SUNSHINE DEVA

Featuring Mark Karan (Ratdog/Grateful Dead Guitarist) and Wynne Paris (Kirtan pioneer). A Mantra Rock experience in association with Shakti Yoga.

Aiko Aiko, Ram Ram … Sunshine Deva is a new mantra rock band formed by Kirtan pioneer, Wynne Paris co-founder of the Lovelight Festival this June (co-founded with Michael Lang) and Ratdog/Grateful Dead family guitarist Mark Karan. Mixing Kirtan and mantra rock seems like a new thing, and doing it with a Grateful Dead/Jamband style is even fresher, maybe Sunshine Deva is tapping into a mythology that goes back to the Summer of Love. Sunshine Deva will be exploring that connection a bit more deeply, literally mashing up Grateful Dead songs and mantra chants. Whether it’s chanting Aiko Aiko, or Ram Ram, the goal is to bring the audience to a blissful space while singing from the heart and dancing in the streets. Hold on to your Mala’s folks, it’s gonna be a wild ride!

Nurtured in and around NYC by a large family of artists, writers, and musicians, Jen’s “observant, lyrically deft, politically aware and emotionally intuitive” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel) songwriting features both her “extraordinary voice” (De krenten uit de pop, The Netherlands) and “astonishing jazz band” (popmatters), the combination of which has garnered her well-deserved praise, solidified by appearances on Late Nite with Conan O’Brien, NPR’s Mountain Stage, WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour, WFUV’s Sunday Breakfast with John Platt, Mary Sue Twohy’s Folk Village and the Bob Edwards Show on Sirius Satellite.

OKKERVIL RIVER

Over the course of their twenty-one-year career, Okkervil River has released nine albums that have given frontman Will Sheff a reputation as one of the greatest working songwriters in the country. As Sheff and his shifting lineup of players have traveled the world many times over, they’ve made fans ranging from Lou Reed to Barack Obama and been praised by outlets from the New York Times to NPR to Pitchfork, who called Sheff “One of indie rock’s most ambitious thinkers.” 2019 will see Okkervil River’s two-decades-plus trek around the globe captured and anthologized in “A Dream in the Dark,” a 12-album live series that follows the group from their shaky and earnest beginnings to their sweat-soaked barnstorming rock club days, and from big festival sets into mellow acoustic improvisations.

Maria Muldaur at Colony Woodstock NY

MARIA MULDAUR

Maria Muldaur is best known world-wide for her 1974 mega-hit “Midnight at the Oasis,” which received several Grammy nominations, and enshrined her forever in the hearts of Baby Boomers everywhere; but despite her considerable pop music success, her 52-year career could best be described a long and adventurous odyssey through the various forms of American Roots Music. During the folk revival of the early 60s, she began exploring and singing early Blues, Bluegrass and Appalachian “Old Timey” Music, beginning her recording career in 1963 with the Even Dozen Jug Band and shortly thereafter, joining the very popular Jim Kweskin Jug Band, touring and recording with them throughout the 60s. In the 42 years since “Midnight at the Oasis,” Maria has toured extensively worldwide and has recorded 40 solo albums covering all kinds of American Roots Music, including Gospel, R&B, Jazz and Big Band (not to mention several award-winning children’s albums), before settling comfortably into her favorite idiom, the Blues, in recent years.

The Messthetics featuring members of Fugazi at Colony Woodstock NY

THE MESSTHETICS

The last time drummer Brendan Canty and bassist Joe Lally were in a band together, they were the rhythmic architects for Fugazi, an organization whose decade and a half of disciplined progressivism provided a necessary bridge between the zenith of late-punk expression and everything alternative in rock that followed. In 2016, the two were enlisted by guitarist Anthony Pirog in a conspiracy to subvert and reimagine the power trio, bringing fully into the 21st Century a form that may have reached near perfection with Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys on the very first day of the 1970s.

The Menzingers at Colony Woodstock NY

THE MENZINGERS

The Menzingers‘ eagerly awaited fifth full-length After the Party is available now. The album arrives as the follow-up to the Philadelphia-based band’s widely acclaimed Rented World.
Produced by Will Yip (Title Fight, Balance & Composure, Pianos Become the Teeth), After the Party taps into the Menzingers’ everyman romanticism to reflect on getting older but not quite growing up. Throughout the album, singer/guitarists Greg Barnett and Tom May, bassist Eric Keen, and drummer Joe Godino offset that deeply nuanced songwriting with anthemic harmonies, furious power chords, and larger-than-life melodies.

KYLE CRAFT & SHOWBOAT HONEY

There is this curious equilibrium to existence: In order to create balance, the universe must giveth, and the universe must taketh. Kyle Craft, along with his now solidified backing band dubbed Showboat Honey, know this all too well. And this is why their self-titled album, the contemplative yet restless Showboat Honey (Sub Pop Records, July 12th, 2019) reflects that sturm und drang. “This is basically an album centered around bad luck and good fortune hitting at the same time,” Craft explains “Then, out of nowhere, I find love. Everything went to shit except that. I guess that’s how life works.”

SCOTT SHARRARD

2018 GRAMMY nominee Scott Sharrard had been the touring guitarist for the Gregg Allman Band since the Fall of 2008. He’s been called “one of the best guitarists in the country” by Billboard. Gregg Allman, had high praise for the guitarist. “I know all about guitar players —I’ve seen the very best — and Scott Sharrard is the perfect guitarist for my band. He understands that you don’t need to play just for the sake of playing; Scott isn’t one of those guys who thinks they’re getting paid by the note. He never steps on the vocals, and leaves plenty of room for everyone else to do their thing, but when it’s time to solo, Scott delivers, boy.”

Woodstock Reggae Fair at Colony Woodstock NY

THE WOODSTOCK REGGAE FAIR WITH THE BIG TAKEOVER AND MORE!

Traditionalists or progressives? Fronted by the charismatic Jamaican-born singer and songwriter Nee Nee Rushie, the seven-piece New York band The Big Takeover plays original music that is rooted in and reverent toward the genres and rhythms of Jamaican pop: reggae, rocksteady, ska. They are devotees of Desmond Dekker and the way the old school did it. At the same time, The Big Takeover crosses lines and blends traditions like global pop fusionists. Their deceptively complex arrangements and big hooks connect with the spirit of Motown and the uptown sophistication of the 21st century retro soul and R&B revival scene.

SAM AMIDON

Sam Amidon thought he had a pretty good idea what direction his new album Lily-O was going to go. Then he started recording it. Due Sept. 30 on Nonesuch Records, what turned out to be a collection of distinctive, enveloping songs rooted in folk music didn’t begin that way at all. In fact, the Vermont-born singer, guitarist, fiddler and banjo player had initially envisioned an album based more on the improvisational material he and jazz guitar great Bill Frisell developed together a couple of years ago while touring New England as a duo…
